Yet again Linux is fucking me off royally. A few weeks ago I managed to finally build the driver for my onboard network adapter, and finally got online. Kubuntu went and updated everything, in much the same way Windows does. Except it upgraded the kernel so my network driver no longer works. And in trying to rebuild it, it fails, because it can't access certain code files which probably aren't on my system.

I was going to save the error messages and log into Windows so that I could post a request for help online, but my Windows drives are all formatted with NTFS, which means Kubuntu can't write anything to them. This pretty much makes having Linux useless to me unless I can figure a convenient way of converting the drive from NTFS to FAT32, or installing the slightly dodgy stuff for Ubuntu that makes NTFS writable. What a load of shit. But even then I still won't have a working net connection until I figure all the rest out.

Yes, I'm being a bit unreasonable, because I'm angry. I just wanted to do some coding but now I can't. The sad thing is that some people enjoy this kind of crap. I just want to use the damn computer, not reconstruct it.

I remember using a tool years ago under Windows when I used to dual boot which would let me read files from ext2 partitions.... I can't remember what it's called but you shouldn't have any problems finding it.

My wireless NIC stopped working when I upgraded Ubuntu once. When I went googling to find out what had happened, there were *loads* of people who had the same problem. Considering how careful those guys are with Debian releases, I can't believe they did something that careless with Ubuntu.

I'd been dealing with annoying problems like this constantly for 8 years when running Linux at home. I'm all MacOSX'd up now though so everything <fanboi> just works </fanboi>

As well as everything 'just working' it's pretty fucking sexy. Where as Windows and Linux are just ooogleh. Clearly this is a very important consideration when choosing an OS.

Exactly. It cost me an extra 100 quid to get my Macbook in black instead of white, making it even sexier.

I would have done exactly the same if it wasn't for the fact that I bought my ibook a year before the macbooks came out :(

I still haven't paid for this one for another year and half!!

What NIC is it that you're having trouble with? I've tried it on several different machines with a variety of built-in NICs without any trouble at all.

Would it not be easier to buy a £5 Network card from ebay or elsewhere having made sure that it would also "just work", i mean that's less then you spend on sandwiches in two days. Hell i'll buy you one!

What do you mean kubuntu cant do anything with a NTFS I never have any problems :S

And technically Kubuntu did not go off and update... you click "YES PLEASE" at some point fool

Man, I thought I was better than that. I was wrong.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu are doing well, but it's baby steps at the moment.

I think you need another computer, a pure 'nix box for that stuff. Possibly even mounted in a rack case for awesome style points!

A while ago, I suggested to the Girl that I should definitely purchase a server cabinet I found for ONLY $50, and that it would only take up a little bit of space in the bedroom...

But, she made her lips go thin and frowny, and I thought better of it. :(
