Going out, university, dreams, etc
Oct. 7th, 2004 06:30 pmWent out last night and that was odd in that I went to the event alone, came back alone, was sort of alone all night, but various people came to talk to me or called me over at regular intervals. In a sense I guess that's socialising in its purest form - it's just odd when you're 'in between people' so to speak and standing with a drink waiting for something to happen. ;)
University's been going ok... very simple stuff for the most part although one module (and thankfully, only one module) is shaping up to be a tough one, with lots of maths and physics that I only have a tenuous grasp on. However it has meant that my purchase of 'Calculus For Dummies', which I talked about on here a couple of months back, has actually proven to be useful because it meant I could actually follow what was going on in the lecture. Which is handy.
And last night I had another variation of my recurring dream. Basically I was walking home along the usual route with a group of people, and for some reason the route was blocked by metal fencing or whatever. Getting around and past this obstacle became quite a task and bizarrely the surroundings became those of a forest. Rather than keep to the floor, I stepped onto low-hanging branches and walked that way, often stepping onto higher branches, gradually climbing upwards without ever really meaning to. I kept turning to one guy who walked beside me and made it clear I wanted to go back down but he firmly but not unkindly encouraged me to carry on. He also avoided answering when I asked where it was we were going. Eventually he pointed up through the leafy canopy to a massive craggy wall of rock, towering several miles into the sky ahead of us, and said "Now that's a mountain." I got the feeling we would somehow end up on top of that, just by continuing to walk on these branches.
And it was at about that point that my conscious mind kicked in and said, "Ben, you're having one of those freaky climbing dreams again. Wake up now." I have lots of dreams that involve otherwise normal environments being somehow altered to incorporate some sort of treacherous climbing situation, whether it's tiny walkways above large rooms, spiral stairways gradually narrowing towards the top, or in this case tree branches giving the illusion of a relatively smooth incline yet carrying me a large distance above the floor. I wonder what twisted part of my psyche the climbing stuff comes from.
