links to relatively recent news
Jun. 25th, 2006 12:40 amYes, I read too much news, I know.
Interesting article on crime: 'Amid this panic over stabbings, we are ignoring what really cuts crime?'. It's quite funny in being a bit too left-wing though. She says, "An unquenchable thirst for punishment has seen the numbers given prison sentences rise by 53% in the same decade that crime has fallen", as if we're being too harsh on people given that crime is dropping, yet forgetting that perhaps crime is dropping because we give out more prison sentences. You can suggest whatever you want with vague statistics.
On a similar note: "The families of murder or manslaughter victims must have more of a voice in court, the lord chancellor has said." I personally think this is a stupid idea, a knee-jerk reaction to be seen as doing something about the rise of violent crime. Should murderers get a more lenient sentence if the person they killed had no family to complain about it?
One for the geeks: "The world's fastest silicon-based microchip has been demonstrated by scientists in the US. The prototype operates at speeds up to 500 gigahertz (GHz) [...]". I hear it'll be a minimum requirement for Doom 4. ;)
'BT and NTL are the home phone companies that UK consumers are least satisfied with, a Uswitch survey has found.' No shit!
"Community websites MySpace and Bebo are fighting to see who is most popular among young people, reveals research." Wtf is Bebo? Is that something I am too old to have heard about? 'The pair are the fifth and sixth biggest brands on the net', apparently.
