I have installed Windows XP on my new hard disk, just about got all the patches and service packs installed, and all my hardware drivers... and I'm getting the same disk errors as before. Except this time on a pristine new disk, with the old disk not even connected up. As [livejournal.com profile] rlucas666 suggested to me before, this points heavily at the motherboard being fucked, or at least the disk controller part. I suppose there's an outside chance that it's a driver issue, though I doubt that would have caused the previous problem where the disk was absent at boot time. Alternatively it could be because there's not enough power to the system, but I don't know how likely that is, or how I'd check.

Either way, this almost certainly means I've bought a new hard disk needlessly, not to mention possibly trashed my old Windows installation for no good reason, and am now left with the prospect of having to completely rebuild my computer yet again. And in the meantime I can't practically work on my website, or record music, or even play Oblivion. I Am Not Happy!

Suggestions would be greatly welcomed, whether for how to test or fix the damn thing, or on how to avoid going into a killing rampage at the annoyance of it all.
