Sep. 20th, 2007

Recently I've had a few interesting discussions with people, some about the nature of friendships, others about the Matching hypothesis (and criticisms of it), and a recently published study claiming that 'men want hot women'.

So, as part of my own informal research into this, I'd like anybody with a bit of free time to do the following:

1) Go through your Livejournal friends list, and count how many people you find romantically and/or physically attractive, and also count the number that you don't.
- Disregard entirely any that are not relevant (eg. wrong gender, communities, duplicates, etc).
- Disregard practical considerations (such as distance, marital status) as it's focusing on attraction among peer groups as opposed to actual relationships as such.
- If you have several who you're unsure about, just split them evenly among the yes and no totals.
- UPDATE - DO include ex-partners on the 'Yes' list, unless you knew full well you weren't attracted to them at the time. (Bad person!)

2) Post an anonymous comment below, giving your gender, and your 2 totals. eg. "Female, 5 yes, 15 no" if you're a female with 20 hypothetical partners on your list, 5 of which you'd potentially be interested in, and 15 you wouldn't. I'm not interested in who they are, just how many. Feel free to specify if you're gay/straight/bi if you like, though I'll consider that optional. Hopefully I've got the anonymous comments enabled properly.

3) If applicable, consider doing the same for your Facebook/MySpace lists, and post those counts too, but be sure to note on your comment which source the totals come from.
- UPDATE - DO include people who are duplicated across multiple social services. I'm interested in comparing the attraction ratio across each service, so don't exclude someone who appears on two or three or the ratio will be biased in favour of the first service you do. This means at least one of you needs to redo your data if it's to be counted.

4) post this on 347 other journals by midnight tomorrow or you'll have bad luck for 10 years Only joking.

If I get enough responses to make the results statistically significant, I'll post them. UPDATE - I still need several more responses.
