Can someone attempt to explain to me why the Western world is so up in arms at the fact that Russia is recognising the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia? Yes, it gives recognition to a separatist region within an existing state's international borders, which is precisely what we did with Kosovo. How can we expect to have any credibility in foreign affairs unless we can explain what the difference is?
