Jul. 2nd, 2009

How often do my posts start with 'not much news' or 'not much to report'? Probably more often than not. That should probably tell me something.

Today, I'm wearing a Daylight Dies t-shirt, which seemed rather ironic and perhaps a bit wishful given that as I walked to get a sandwich today I was melting under the sun's relentless rays. I love this weather but it is making it hard to work (as the office is 30°C/86°F), not to mention sleep (as my room, at 2am, is 29°C/84°F).

Also today, I am starting to ache from the intense rigours of having been front row centre at the Kataklysm gig the other day. That was really good and I knew all the songs except one, which helped. The support band Keep Of Kalessin have improved a lot since the first time I saw them, even if I do still find them a bit bland on the recordings. And headliners Death Angel were ok for a thrash band, nothing exciting or particularly novel, but they played well and seemed like nice guys. It would have been nice if their mix had been more balanced than  "90% snare drum, 10% rest of band" however.

The venue was very pleasantly air-conditioned, just a shame that their drinks selection is still really poor. I'm not a drinks connoisseur or anything but then I don't really enjoy cheap-tasting drinks. Ah well.  It was good to see various assorted people, such as Gaz who I used to work with, Pink and Fiona, and various others. As is quite common I also ran into people I barely recognised who asked me, "where's Allan?" - I told them he doesn't like this loud rock and roll music. Possibly misleading. One of these people remembered me from a past meeting, saying "You're the guy who hates Paradise Lost, aren't you?" I may have been slightly misleading him on that occasion too.

On a final music-related note, it looks like I'm going to end up spending £50 on getting my guitar set up properly. Yesterday I bit the bullet and decided to risk doing it myself, only to find out that the bolt I need to adjust is refusing to turn. I tried the same bolt on a different guitar and it turned like a knife passing through butter, so obviously something's wrong with the new guitar. It's just so annoying how this costs so much money; I read about someone in Germany getting the same sort of service for about 15€, so I'm a bit jealous.
