My cd purchases are slowing down at the moment, with me no longer passing Reveal Records in Derby every day, and having cleared out Selectadisc in town of everything worth having. However, tomorrow ironlord should hopefully have 4 more cds from his bulk order for me:

I recommend the pirates of the Caribbean 2 soundtrack, if you liked Gladiator. Both stellar Zimmer works (the first film was a baudelt job, which was alright, but Zimmer has taken it to a new level.

No, to be honest I never heard much Celtic Frost before but thought I'd give this a listen... too much 70s influence for my liking however. I prefer something a bit 'crisper', for lack of a suitable adjective.

I think I've heard all their albums at least once... but whether the music made an impact at all, that's a different question. :)

Heh well I use to be quite a big fan (and of 1980's British grindcore in general!) but these days I find their earlier stuff a bit too simple. There's definitely some good tunes (I remember Embryonic Necropsy And Devourement being a particular favourite!) there if you can stand the bloody awful "recorded this in a garage" production. By earlier albums I mean albums before Necrotism which was really the turning point and their best work IMHO.

I can't stop listening to Monotheist. It just sounds so WRONG! ANd that fucking guitar tone!

I can see why a lot of people won't/don't like it, as it's more Hellhammer than Frost, but it certainly pushes my buttons.

Monotheist just isn't my type of music really. Can't complain much on objective grounds, I just don't like it.

And the sad thing about Arch Enemy is that they've even pretty much come out and said bringing Angela on board was a deliberate gimmick. Very sad.

I only have that one Lake of Tears album. I bought it on impulse having thought I'd read a good review somewhere, so maybe I need to hear a different album. As with the Celtic Frost, perhaps more so, this album was really just not my thing, as opposed to me thinking it was bad or anything.

I just bought Battle Metal by Turisas on Saturday, and i'm loving all the recorders and fiddles on it! very good indeed.

You might like Ensiferum too, especially their "Iron" album. A lot of the Finnish bands go in for the traditional orchestration alongside the typical guitar stuff - very interesting.

Sounds intriguing...will see if i can get some of their stuff. i started transcribing the track "Battle metal" a few weeks ago, but gave up after one line or so cos it was too hard. Might have another go when i get chance cos i'd quite like to be able to play it properly!

Sounds interesting. Mael Mordha - the band on the t-shirt I was wearing at the gig - have some recorder parts in their songs, which comes from the Irish influence, and that sounds really good. It's certainly quite distinctive. Maybe I'll rope you in to perform some parts for my demo. ;)

I didn't even know the Doom:VS album was coming out, but I came across it in the record shop and recognised the name from somewhere. Not bad for an impulse purchase!

Yet weirdly enough, it's dead easy to find both Swallow the Sun albums, and no doubt the new one will have some big sticker on it saying 'Melodic European Black Metal FIVE STARS!' etc. Have they gotten really big or something? I'm sorta out of the loop.

I think I have 5 cds by Sentenced now, and I have no idea what any of the songs on them are called. Now that's devotion.

I think Swallow The Sun are getting a very good critical response. Both albums are pretty free of fillers, well-produced, and flawlessly executed, so it's easy to get into... at least as far as Finnish doom metal goes. I suppose it helps that few bands are doing that style of music at the moment, too.

Amusingly, almost every cd I buy from Selectadisc comes with a sticker saying "stunning [insert subgenre here] metal from [Scandinavian country or England]". I checked, and 'stunning' doesn't appear on every cd, just mainly the ones I buy.
