Well, finding a dummies' guide to differential equations online is looking more difficult than anticipated, so I might have to dig out the old lecture notes and see if they make any more sense at the second reading than they did at the first.
Thinking more on my intellectual issues today, I realised that perhaps the reason I'm not so good any more at the abstract things like mathematics and logic puzzles is because I've shifted my focus onto more practical applications such as writing music and computer software, where you are actually creating something tangible instead of just having to visualise it. I wonder if it's possible to get good at one without losing the other. The music writing is coming along very nicely though so I don't mind too much if my differential equations has to suffer for it.

Anyway, research into mathematics may take a back seat for now as I'm more interested right now in finding out about how human settlements evolved over time; specifically how people decided where to place them, what influenced their growth or demise, how geography affected culture, and so on. I have no ideas where to start looking for evidence or theories on this, beyond my own basic common sense.

In more mundane matters, I've done very little recently, of note or otherwise. I applied for a job last week, and will apply for another tomorrow. It's a bit awkward when you know that the person you're quoting as a reference may well be applying for exactly the same jobs as you though. Not much I can do about that; the job market around here is pretty meagre and I expect everyone I know with vaguely similar interests or experience is applying for these positions. I should start using my spare time to pick up some new skills.

Didn't go to Leicester last Saturday as the Friday Cider Disaster, combined with a lack of hearing anything from anybody on Saturday until the last minute, persuaded me that a quiet night in would be best. Apparently they played loads of stuff I would have liked, but I would have missed it anyway since the people I had intended to travel with didn't make it to the club until 11pm. No great loss then.
