effort

Hurrah - I'm having to work with a nice collection of out-of-date technologies here - MapBasic 4.1 (from 1997), Visual Basic 6 (1998), and DDE which is so out of date it's barely documented anywhere, and any requests on how to use it tend to be answered with "Don't."

Mild irritation at this sort of drudgery, along with general disdain at my lack of motivation and poor use of time, has led me to devise a three-part checklist for things to be accomplished before the end of the year, so that I feel I am doing something useful and making progress. One of the three is to finish recording these songs for my demo. Anyone who's paid any attention to my musical ramblings will know I'm 2 years late with this. However I bought myself a cheap Zoom G2 which is a verrrrrry nice piece of kit for the negligible price and makes decent recordings a lot more practical. It seems to work just as well as a Line6 Pod except it doesn't have 101 crap jazz and blues tones that I'll never find a use for. I'll post a sample of what it sounds like soon. The second of the three is to finish off the computer game I've been writing for years, and which really doesn't require much more work. Having turned down the opportunity to do that sort of thing for a living, I'd like to do it on the side. And the third of the three things is personal and won't be discussed here. :)

Oh, and I also have a 100 page dissertation to do within the month, if I ever want this MSc. And I need to see the doctor. (Nothing life-threatening or debilitating, worry not.) And register my new address with various companies and authorities. And tell my mother I moved house. And get out of said house on more than one evening a week.

Random: when travelling on the train, everyone else is reading the latest Dan Brown regurgitation or the like, but I have my Artificial Intelligence textbook open. I wonder what people think. In my defense, I would read the next Bernard Cornwell book about Vikings and Saxons instead if he'd finished it yet. The same goes for the forthcoming George R. R. Martin book, A Feast For Crows, due out October 17th. If I'm not learning something useful, I like to read about angry people hitting each other with swords, preferably killing as many good guys as bad guys. Both these writers nail that superbly.
