Feb. 5th, 2006 07:41 pmThe weather has been annoying of late, especially since I have to brave it every morning. I hate the cold and will be quite glad to see the start of Spring. Having said that, acclimatising to the times recently where it's been subzero all day have meant that I was walking round in just a t-shirt yesterday when most people I saw were in the heavy coats. At least the days are getting lighter.
My mind has been working oddly recently. I posted a few entries back about memories and so on, and part of that was because I'm finding myself remembering a lot of things from the past, entirely random things. For instance, an hour ago I was wiping some crumbs off my trousers when suddenly I was reminded of a dream I had some time ago - 5 years? 10 years? who knows - where I was in one of those real life/computer game hybrid that I tend to dream of every so often. This is just one example of about 5 or 6 times recently where I've been reminded of something from the past, and there is never any apparent link between what I'm seeing and doing now and what I'm remembering. Half of me thinks this is a sign that I'm somehow improving my recollection skills, and the other half thinks I'm going senile. A bit of each, probably.
This stuff annoys the hell out of me: "Danish embassy in Beirut torched", and "Cartoon protest slogans condemned". The Muslim world has been complaining about being treated as if they're all suicide bombers and terrorists, which is a fair complaint. But to then turn around and say, "because of the actions of one newspaper we're going to boycott/attack/threaten an entire nation of people" is, well, utterly hypocritical. And the latter case, where people have marched in this country holding up placards saying "Europe, you will pay" or "Massacre those who insult Islam", and where one guy dressed up as a suicide bomber... well, that's just not acceptable. The fact that no arrests were made is doubly unacceptable. Deport them where possible, incarcerate them where it's not. It's no good charging BNP members with 'incitement to hatred' over speeches given in private when on the other side of the equation you have militants on the streets encouraging violence and terrorism with nothing being done about it.
On a lighter note, I leave you with linkage:
- Reverse dictionary - type in what you're thinking of, and it'll try to guess the word for you. Of course, it's not actually a dictionary, so you can abuse it to find related terms: eg. this search for Metallica/ Slayer/Pantera or the rather amusing first result for 'ringwraith hobbit sauron'
- The Amazing T-Shirt Folding Trick (which I once mastered, but have now forgotten again)
- Cool terms like the Fridance and percussive maintenance.
Sorry, I know you deserve more than that after the rant, but that's all I can find and I have to go record some music! :)
