We had another band practice today, which went surprisingly well considering how mediocre the previous one was. I think the earplugs I got from the drum shop in Derby helped too. I'm pretty poor on the guitar these days though. Perhaps I'll start practising regularly again... if I can find the time... and the motivation. I'm still working on writing the same song I was working on 6 weeks ago, and getting nowhere.

As for real bands...

Anyone in any doubt as to the fact that Paradise Lost were the main influence for Katatonia need only look at the comments on guitarist Gregor Mackintosh's MySpace page, where Anders 'Blakkheim' Nyström posted "thank you for the huge influence back in 1991. if there would have been no 'Gothic' that year - there would have been no Katatonia either". This is quite cool, but I don't know what to think about the fact that most of the people in bands I like have MySpace pages. A sign of the times, perhaps.

There's a new My Dying Bride album due out in a couple of months; hope it's good. And the aforementioned Paradise Lost should be back in the studio this autumn, recording the long-awaited follow-up to 1993's 'Icon' epic opus. Maybe.

And then there's the news that Jon from Dissection killed himself in some satanic ritual, having decided it was time to go, so to speak. I can't imagine the kind of self-belief and confidence - misguided or otherwise - that someone must have to be able to do that, especially for someone who explicitly doesn't believe in the Judeo-Christian utopian afterlife. Slightly unsettling!

To end on a less sombre note: The Fresh Prince of Death Metal
