annoyances

Dec. 15th, 2006 01:30 pm
It's hard to get decent food at lunchtimes. Me and [profile] lost_in_moose went to a sandwich shop where I had to ask if they had anything that wasn't covered in cheese. I ended up with a chicken and bacon sandwich, which actually means a mayonnaisse sandwich with sparse meaty granules in it. Annoying. Among the constants in life, inability to find edible food ranks alongside inability to get anybody to deliver anything to me properly.

I spent the entirety of yesterday evening fixing my computer, still. After struggling with a bizarre error that was none of my fault, I eventually managed to get Windows XP installing yet again. Hopefully it'll actually be usable tonight.

I've got quite a short temper at the moment. A large part of that is down to the time of year, and people generally forgetting that not everyone is enjoying it like they are. Another part of it is getting fed up at the violent crime that seems to be concentrated on the area of town between my house and the city centre. It's 5 minutes' walk from the central police station but that doesn't seem to stop the muggings or other anti-social behaviour.

I'm also getting fed up with the trend towards bending over backwards to help minorities feel less out of place at the expense of the majority. We're so afraid of offending someone or failing to meet some obscure need that the general person gets ignored. If they then speak up, they're quickly dismissed with words like "closed-minded" or "fascist" or some other charged term that substitutes for having to actually think. We spent hundreds of years evolving towards a democracy, only to start giving it away in capitulation to those who would accuse us of discrimination. That word itself signifies everything that is wrong about this mindset; originally merely meaning the act of carefully marking the differences between different options, it now has a strong negative connotation attached to it. We've demonised the ability to see distinguishing features or to have preferences, encouraging everybody to feel obliged to like everything equally (despite any inherent qualities you can identify, or your right to an opinion) and treat everybody equally (no matter how repugnant their choice of actions, or their detrimental effect on society). This is hopelessly wrong.

PS. Oh, and there's a chance that I may disembowel the next person that posts the "12 days of Christmas" thing on Livejournal. And don't call it a meme unless you know what the word actually means. Kthxbye.
