Mar. 21st, 2007 12:00 pm'How death metal is the soundtrack of child prodigies' - take that, people of dubious musical taste. I particularly love the way the article enumerates System of a Down, Machine Head, Slipknot, Slayer, and Finntroll.
Less impressive is that it will have taken at least 2 weeks for Selectadisc to order in the Swallow The Sun album. No wonder people buy online if getting it via regular distributors takes a fortnight, and it doesn't arrive on the shelves until 6 weeks after the official release date. Isn't it strange that, despite the economies of scale in packing thousands of cds together into one batched delivery, the cds still end up more expensive in the shop than if you order them to be sent individually by post.
This reminds me, I'm not particularly impressed by people who download full copies of a band's album, especially before it is even released. When you do this, you're helping to choke off an already pretty tenuous revenue stream. I am also particularly unimpressed by the array of lame excuses people employ to justify doing this.
On the other hand I've been giving some thought into how to increase the desirability of owning the original music. I think distributing a plain cd with not much else in the package is futile, but the question is what to bundle with it?
Tonight I might make a start on recording The Song That Has Taken Months, although I'm not convinced I have the right guitar sound for it just yet. The drums are done though. And I'm waiting to hear back from our prospective vocalist who's supposed to be knocking up a quick demo of her vocals with 'our' music. Listening to early After Forever and The Gathering gives me a bit more confidence that it might work, so who knows.
EDIT: how bizarre. LJ seemed to have posted a previous edit of this, and when I hit Submit, I had 2 posts, the last one of which I hadn't finished fixing. This site gets weirder every day.
