People annoy me, part 35674
Mar. 28th, 2007 08:01 pmWow... I always had a general disdain for The Guardian newspaper, but the posts from readers on this discussion regarding the abduction of British sailors by Iran are beyond belief. I mean, I'm far from supporting our presence in that part of the world, or any number of dubious foreign policy decisions, but how can so many people use these things as excuses to justify Iran kidnapping members of our military? If a small craft is a couple of thousand yards into your territorial waters, you hail it and demand that it leaves, or perhaps fire warning shots, not arrest the perpetrators and remove them to a hidden location inland. (Unless perhaps you're Russia, equally well known as a bastion of human rights and diplomacy.)
Meanwhile back home, various people conspire to destroy what's left of our education system. Tony Blair wants to match donations to universities, meaning the larger and more prestigious ones get even more money and the others fall even further behind. Then the people who run the universities come out with unbelievable ideas like 'families should expect to save much more for their children's education'. Why should my parents be financially punished for my adult education choice? Why should only those from richer families be expected to go to university? How arrogant. Meanwhile universities are to get data on an applicant's ethnic background on the application form, meaning left-wing establishments can start discriminating against white people in favour of minorities who are thought to have put in more effort to get where they are, and right-wing establishments can more easily keep out 'those foreign Johnnies' without even needing to invite anybody to an interview to see what they look like. What a mess.
