historical inaccuracy
Dec. 3rd, 2007 07:09 pmToday's annoyance; Americans who think that their nation somehow saved the British during World War 2. Any time there's a discussion online where there's disagreement between Britain and America, some American comes along complaining about Limeys who are ungrateful for having their asses saved.
This is somewhat ridiculous. Nazi German plans for invading Britain were put on indefinite hold as a result of British resistance in September 1940. The USA however, entered WW2 in December 1941, over a year later. Even the American loans of money and equipment - which have now been totally repaid by the UK - didn't start until March 1941, 6 months after the Luftwaffe was fortuitously repelled by the Royal Air Force. And many would argue that Germany sealed its fate by invading the numerically superior Soviet Union - this began in June 1941, ie. after the Battle of Britain and before America joined the Allies.
So, where does this arrogant and misinformed attitude come from? Just what do they teach the kids over there? None of my American friends have said anything along these lines, but I see it so often that it does make me wonder.
