Work were extravagant and bought us all new computers. So I have 2 now. The new one is an Intel Core Duo 6600, and has a 234457" widescreen monitor which is totally impractical to use due to being too wide to view in one go, but I digress. It came from Dell, and quite frankly I am appalled by their default software installation. As soon as I get into Windows, I'm bombarded with the following:
  • a "Take a tour of Windows XP" bubble at the bottom of the screen, to show me the exciting 'new' features of XP.
  • a warning from McAfee Personal Firewall Plus that 'CLI Application (Command Line Interface)' is requesting access to the Internet. Do I want to allow it?
  • an advert from McAfee Security Center asking if I want to spend $59.99 to buy some sort of extended version.
  • a warning from McAfee Security Center that a critical software update is now available, saying that if I want it I need to register first, and asking me if I want to do that now;
  • A 'McAfee Product Setup' box, inviting me to set up McAfee Security Center. I wonder if there's an option in there to "Disable fucking retarded pop-up boxes []". There is no Close or Cancel option, only Next. Once you complete or decline to complete all that, McAfee Security Center pops up and proudly displays a load of meaningless jargon and bar graphs for your delectation.
  • a full-screen 'Toolbar EULA' for my new Dell PC, showing graphics of the Google Desktop, Dell Start Page, and the Google Toolbar. It has no close button, and you have to scroll down to see the 'Continue' button. Once I click 'Decline' on the licence for Google Toolbar, it claims to uninstall it automatically (good) but opens up a new Internet Explorer window with 2 extra pop-up boxes, one telling me that it just restricted a cookie, and one asking "Did you notice the Information Bar?" (bad). Later inspection shows that it didn't uninstall Google Toolbar at all (very bad).
  • a few minutes later, a "New updates are ready to download" bubble appears, as 'updates are available from Java Update'. Upon downloading these and electing to install them, it tells you that the installation package couldn't be opened and that the upgrade has failed.
HOW THE HELL HAS ANYBODY EVER DECIDED THAT THIS IS A REASONABLE CHAIN OF EVENTS TO INFLICT UPON AN END USER, NEVER MIND A PAYING CUSTOMER?
