Belated Bloodstock report
Sep. 15th, 2003 02:54 pmI never actually wrote anything significant about Bloodstock, despite
l0stxstar asking me about it. Oops.
Well, there were a lot more people there that I knew this time, compared to last year. But then I suppose there were a lot more people there in general; they had the balcony open this year which, giving that it was almost full, must have meant that it was attended by maybe double the number of people who were here last time around. Which is good.
PL sounded better than they have done for 6 years, which I largely attribute to Gregor having grown back much of his hair, although Nick looked pissed off with something, as he often does. As mentioned in a previous entry, I posted something about this on the Paradise Lost boards and got an interesting reply from him.
Edguy and Dragonforce were funny. Nightwish less so. Dragonforce's guitarist was the only one that impressed me this year. Is that because I'm becoming a better guitarist or that the Bloodstock line-up is getting worse? Hmm...
I didn't manage to catch more than 5 minutes of any of the lesser bands as I seemed to always be chatting to someone or other, or queuing for refreshments. Or visiting a local craft shop to get superglue to mend a friend's boot. Or avoiding the guy whose only memory of me is that I puked on his boots 7 years ago. Anyway..!
I wish I hadn't missed Waylander, because they're supposed to be a bit like Primordial, who I really liked when I saw them last time around. Most of the bands on the 2nd stage all sounded alike, and were wearing each others t-shirts so I had no idea who was who. It might have helped if they'd updated the backdrop with each new band that went on stage, so that you knew who you were listening to, but no.
As always with British 'festivals' (although I'm loathe to call an indoor gig a festival), everything was running late. Maybe it was the pessimistic acceptance of this problem that caused the organisers to hide the running order and times out of sight. Last year the times were up on all the pillars, whereas this year there were maybe 2 or 3 copies at most, hidden out of the way.
As usual, most of the bands with mingling with the crowd, especially out in the foyer and market area. This caused a lot of comments such as "Blaze Bayley. *sigh* There's no need for that.". And from one of my female friends, "Oh my god, there's the singer from Dragonforce with beautiful hair. Mmm. Oh dear, he has an annoying laugh." Of course, the true 'superstars' like Nightwish and Paradise Lost were hidden away somewhere out of sight.
And, that was about it.

There was a discussion on UM about girl's not really liking the music and just saying they like them because they fancy the band members etc..

Date: 2003-09-15 06:29 pm (UTC)Or Coal Chamber because of Rayna, and then that other girl whose name I don't recall...?
(And seriously, Coal Chamber don't really have anything much else going for them. Didn't, that is.)

Date: 2003-09-16 03:10 am (UTC)Musicians have always been sexy. Just because I fantasise about that cute girl I see on stage thrashing the hell out of her guitar, doesn't mean I don't like her music.
In fact, I think it's complementary... The better her music(or more accurately, the more I like it), the more attractive she becomes.
If she happens to suck at music, she plunges back into being "just another cute girl", but with the added stigma of being that "just another cute girl that really fucking offends my ears".
And, she plunges to below average in my esteem. :)
D'oh!
