Belated Bloodstock report
Sep. 15th, 2003 02:54 pmI never actually wrote anything significant about Bloodstock, despite
l0stxstar asking me about it. Oops.
Well, there were a lot more people there that I knew this time, compared to last year. But then I suppose there were a lot more people there in general; they had the balcony open this year which, giving that it was almost full, must have meant that it was attended by maybe double the number of people who were here last time around. Which is good.
PL sounded better than they have done for 6 years, which I largely attribute to Gregor having grown back much of his hair, although Nick looked pissed off with something, as he often does. As mentioned in a previous entry, I posted something about this on the Paradise Lost boards and got an interesting reply from him.
Edguy and Dragonforce were funny. Nightwish less so. Dragonforce's guitarist was the only one that impressed me this year. Is that because I'm becoming a better guitarist or that the Bloodstock line-up is getting worse? Hmm...
I didn't manage to catch more than 5 minutes of any of the lesser bands as I seemed to always be chatting to someone or other, or queuing for refreshments. Or visiting a local craft shop to get superglue to mend a friend's boot. Or avoiding the guy whose only memory of me is that I puked on his boots 7 years ago. Anyway..!
I wish I hadn't missed Waylander, because they're supposed to be a bit like Primordial, who I really liked when I saw them last time around. Most of the bands on the 2nd stage all sounded alike, and were wearing each others t-shirts so I had no idea who was who. It might have helped if they'd updated the backdrop with each new band that went on stage, so that you knew who you were listening to, but no.
As always with British 'festivals' (although I'm loathe to call an indoor gig a festival), everything was running late. Maybe it was the pessimistic acceptance of this problem that caused the organisers to hide the running order and times out of sight. Last year the times were up on all the pillars, whereas this year there were maybe 2 or 3 copies at most, hidden out of the way.
As usual, most of the bands with mingling with the crowd, especially out in the foyer and market area. This caused a lot of comments such as "Blaze Bayley. *sigh* There's no need for that.". And from one of my female friends, "Oh my god, there's the singer from Dragonforce with beautiful hair. Mmm. Oh dear, he has an annoying laugh." Of course, the true 'superstars' like Nightwish and Paradise Lost were hidden away somewhere out of sight.
And, that was about it.
